PREFACE.

THE observations contained in this volume, were, for the greater part, made at various times, during a residence of twelve years on Saint Helena ; and are now laid before the public, in the hope that they will afford some information concerning an insulated spot, hitherto little known, but which, by a wonderful series of events, has recently become peculiarly interesting.

That the writer has not executed his task, even to his own satisfaction, he readily acknowledges. Let this candid confession mitigate the severity of censure ; of this, however, the reader may be assured, that there is no passage of doubtful veracity inserted, but that the whole is either the result of personal acquaintance and remark, or gathered from sources of unquestionable authenticity.

The Tour itself was at first intended as illustrative of a Plan of the Island, from an actual topographical survey, made by the writer in the years 1810-11, now in the possession of the Honourable Court of Directors ; and the materials composing the second and third parts of the book, were collected previously to the arrival of Buonaparte.

The notices concerning natural history, are offered with great diffidence ; except the botanical list, which, being arranged by the late celebrated Dr. Roxburgh in 1814, is entitled to all confidence.

Major Gen. Beatson’s “Tracts on Saint Helena,” did not reach the Island until April or May of the present year :- in his work is a list of plants, &c. nearly verbatim with that in the present, as it was furnished to him by the same eminent authority it could not be otherwise. This is mentioned to prevent the imputation of plagiarism. They have been collated, it is acknowledged, and the arrangement of General Beatson adopted in preference to that which was at first intended.

The fourth part consists of some particulars relative to Buonaparte’s arrival ; of the effects which have, and may probably result from his detention ; and of other miscellaneous subjects.

Observations on the government, laws, and political affairs of the Island have been purposely abstained from : referring the reader for full and undoubted information on these subjects, to a History of Saint Helena, written by T. H. Brooke, Esq. secretary to the government.

Some extracts are also made from a Description of Saint Helena, 1815—anonymous.

To the whole an appendix is subjoined, in which copies are given of the proclamations and other public papers, which have been issued by the government here, since October, 1815.
