Vera effigies ... Helenæ, Linschoten, 1598

The second St. Helena plate in Linschoten's Itinerario is titled Vera effigies et delineatios Insulæ Sanctæ Helenæ … (size 480 × 310 mm; reproduced above) and states it to be The true description, and situation of the Iland St Helena, on the East, North, and West sydes, lying under 16. degrees on the Southsyde of the Equinoxiall line. The three views show (top) the east side of the island Thus the east side of the island of St Helena showeth it selfe as yow sayle towardes it coming from the Cape de Bona Speranza and so runeth along towardes the northwest point, (middle) the north side of the island Thus the north syde of the Island showeth it selfe as yow sayle within a caliver shot from it, and (bottom) the west side of the island Thus the west syde of the Island showeth it selfe when yow lie at anker before it, about a caliver shot distant from it.
